Sunderland's manager, Martin O'Neill, has signed the free agent Carlos Cuéllar on a two-year deal. The 30-year-old Spaniard's contract with Aston Villa expired at the weekend.
Cuéllar will be reunited with O'Neill, who signed the defender for £7.8m in 2008 when in charge of Villa.
The Spaniard, who previously played for Osasuna and Rangers, appeared 94 times for Villa but was not a regular in the starting line-up last season. He can play at right-back or in central defence.
Sunderland start their Premier League campaign against Arsenal at Emirates Stadium on 18 August. Read More
