John Terry has confirmed he is pleading not guilty at the start of his trial for allegedly racially abusing Anton Ferdinand.

The Chelsea captain had arrived at Westminster magistrates court wearing a grey suit and pink tie, as scores of the world's media waited outside. He did not say anything when asked for a comment.

The 31-year-old England footballer is charged with a racially aggravated public order offence.

He is accused of shouting a racist obscenity at Ferdinand, who plays for Queens Park Rangers, during a Premier League match at Loftus Road on 23 October last year.

Terry faces a maximum fine of £2,500 if convicted.

The case is expected to last five days and will be heard by the chief magistrate Howard Riddle and no jury. Read More
