• SFA sends expression of interest to Uefa over tournament
• Georgia and Turkey also candidates before Tuesday deadline
The Scottish Football Association has confirmed it has sent "an expression of interest" to Uefa regarding the possibility of hosting the 2020 European Championship jointly with Wales and the Republic of Ireland.
The first phase of bidding for the event closed on Tuesday, with Georgia and Turkey also candidates.
Uefa says three nations could co-host the finals under "exceptional circumstances" and the celtic proposal will need to fulfil stadium requirements. From 2016 the Euro finals will comprise 24 teams compared with the current 16.
An SFA spokesman said: "We can confirm that we have had initial discussions on the principle of a joint bid with both Wales and the Republic of Ireland and have declared our interest to Uefa in order that we can fully explore the opportunity in more detail. At this stage no bids are expected by Uefa in relation to Euro 2020. These will not be required for at least 18 months."
France, who will host the the event in four years' time, will use 10 grounds with regulations insisting on at least nine.
A joint bid from Scotland and Ireland to host Euro 2008 failed, while the Scots and Welsh held preliminary discussions about staging the 2016 event.
Ireland is the only nation of the three which will compete in this summer's European Championship in Ukraine and Poland. A spokesman for the Football Association of Ireland said their counterparts in Scotland and Wales had extended an invitation "to join them in making an expression of interest and we have agreed to do that but it's at a very preliminary stage and it's just an expression of interest.
"There are no bids required for another couple of years and the idea has not been explored at this stage in any real detail. Obviously it's not something that we would be giving a huge amount of thought to this close to the Euros." Read More
