The Russian's club have won the trophy at last after eight seasons of near misses and frustration

2003-04

Having overcome Arsenal, Chelsea face Monaco in the semi-finals and are favourites. But after Claudio Ranieri's tinkering they lose the first leg 3-1 before a 2-2 draw in the return at Stamford Bridge leads to their exit. Ranieri is sacked.

2004-05

With José Mourinho in charge, Chelsea win the title for the first time in 50 years and reach the Champions League semi-finals again, where they are drawn against Liverpool. But Luis García's "ghost goal" in the second leg secures the Reds' passage to the final, which they win dramatically.

2005-06

Mourinho's men retain the title but go backwards in Europe, beaten by Barcelona, the eventual winners, in the last 16. Chelsea lose the first leg 2-1 having led through Thiago's own goal before drawing the return at the Camp Nou 1-1, with Frank Lampard's late penalty cancelling out a strike from Ronaldinho.

2006-07

Another semi-final appearance against Liverpool and once again it is the men in red who prevail. This time Chelsea win the first leg 1-0, thanks to a first-half goal from Joe Cole, but go on to draw the return at Anfield 1-1 before losing 4-1 on penalties. The title is surrendered to Manchester United.

2007-08

With Mourinho having been sacked at the start of the season, Avram Grant goes one better than the Portuguese by beating Liverpool in the semi-finals. Chelsea face United in the Moscow final and after a 1-1 draw have the chance to win the trophy on penalties. But John Terry hits the post and Sir Alex Ferguson's side prevail 6-5.

2008-09

Another controversial loss in the semi-finals. Barcelona go through on away goals after a 1-1 draw in the second leg at Stamford Bridge. The referee, Tom Henning Ovrebo, turns down four penalty appeals from the home side, leaving them and caretaker manager Guus Hiddink enraged.

2009-10

Mourinho comes back to haunt Chelsea, leading Inter to a 3-1 aggregate victory in the last 16. There is consolation for the vanquished, however, as they land a League and FA Cup Double in Carlo Ancelotti's first season in charge.

2010-11

Ancelotti makes progress by taking Chelsea to the quarter-finals but there they are beaten 3-1 on aggregate by Manchester United, the eventual runners-up. The Italian is sacked at the end of the season after also losing the title to Ferguson's side. Read More
