Today's rumours are on the red eye

It has been a difficult morning for the Mill, trying to erase the tedium of "who is better, Ronaldo or Messi?" that has been scarred forever on to its mind since Portugal's victory over Czech Republic. As a distraction the Mill has been racking its brain to come up with a more interesting question – is Alberto Aquilani the worst Premier League transfer in recent memory?

Well, 28 appearances since signing for Liverpool in 2009 may be a fine record in Winston Bogarde's book, but a £20m outlay for a player who has made more appearances in Serie A since his arrival on Merseyside suggests otherwise. Milan are interested in signing the midfielder on a permanent basis following his loan at San Siro last season, when he scored one goal in 23 league appearances.

But fear not Liverpool supporters, it is not all bad news. Brendan Rodgers is hoping to agree a minimum £10m deal for the Roma striker Fabio Borini this summer, having coached him as a youngster at Chelsea and having signed him on loan at Swansea.

Away from Anfield and Arsenal are closing in on Montpellier's forward Olivier Giroud, with Arsène Wenger claiming a deal is "90% done". The Gunners manager mused: "I think he has exceptional potential and will integrate very well," sounding eerily similar to when Marouane Chamakh made the switch to north London two years ago: "Chamakh is a striker of real quality and has all the attributes suited to come to England and do very well." Oh dear.

Nigel de Jong is sharpening his studs as contact negotiations with Manchester City remain a no-go, and City are prepared to let the Dutchman depart when his contact expires next summer, the league champions failing to grasp why a player with such flair and skill does not deserve the measly salary of, err, £100,000 a week.

Out-of-contract Danny Murphy could make a return to the north west with Blackburn Rovers interested in bringing him to Ewood Park to spearhead their attempt at bouncing back to the Premier League. Steve Kean has apparently been told that he will be getting "top-flight" quality players into his squad, but then again we are still waiting for Ronaldinho's arrival.

Olof Mellberg, fresh from scoring two goals against England at Euro 2012, could make a return to these shores with Everton after contract talks with Greek side Olympiakos broke down.

And after realising that Rangers are packing their bags and looking to move to any Football League club that might have them, Steve Davis could be tempted to move as far away from Glasgow as possible, as Southampton continue to sniff, not literally, around the midfielder. Read More
