• Former West Germany captain cites 'emotion' of shoot-outs
• Fifa president Sepp Blatter had called for an alternative

Franz Beckenbauer has said that matches that finish in a draw should continue to be decided with penalty-kick shoot-outs.

Beckenbauer, the former World Cup-winner, West Germany and Bayern Munich captain and now head of a Fifa task force to improve football for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, said the shoot-outs "bring emotions into play and are a lot more attractive than the toss of a coin, for example".

Beckenbauer's comments, reportedin the German newspaper Bild, came a day after the Fifa president, Sepp Blatter, said Beckenbauer's panel of experts should find an alternative to shoot-outs.

Blatter told the Fifa congress on Friday that football "loses its essence" when matches are settled by penalty kicks. He later clarified his view on Twitter, writing that he did not want to scrap shoot-outs, but believed that matches should be decided "11 v 11". Read More
