• Paul Green replaces midfielder Fahey in squad
• Concern grows over John O'Shea and Shay Given

Giovanni Trapattoni has injury concerns over John O'Shea, his first-choice right-back, and the goalkeeper Shay Given as the Republic of Ireland head for the European Championship.

Trapattoni has also lost the back-up midfielder Keith Fahey. The Birmingham City player felt his groin problem in the warm-up before the friendly 1-0 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina and a post-match scan confirmed his worst fears. He has been withdrawn from the squad and replaced by Paul Green, who is seeking a club after being released by Derby County.

O'Shea, who exacerbated an ankle injury for Sunderland against Manchester United on the Premier League's final day, gave an on-pitch interview before the friendly in which he said that he would not return to training until Wednesday.

Trapattoni will submit his 23-man squad for the Euro 2012 finals to Uefa on Tuesday and O'Shea, Given and Kevin Foley, another right-back, who has not trained because of a hamstring problem, are expected to be on the list. But Paul McShane, one of the stand-by pool, who started at right-back against Bosnia, will travel with the squad as the 24th man. Trapattoni said that he had until the day of the opening Group C fixture against Croatia on 10 June to consider whether to bring in McShane, if either O'Shea or Foley were to prove unfit.

After a week-long training camp in Italy, Ireland play their final warm-up fixture against Hungary in Budapest on Monday week.

"With regard to McShane, we wait to know about O'Shea and Foley," Trapattoni said. "I don't know if they recover in time for the next game. We cannot decide in this moment. But please, calm, calm, calm. We have until the first game."

Given damaged his knee in training last Monday and he has sought the second opinion of a specialist in London. Keiren Westwood deputised ably for him against Bosnia-Herzegovina.

"We need to do another test on Given, there are two or three checks [before we know]," Trapattoni said. "At the next training session, we will try out Given and O'Shea. They must show us that they are ready."

Trapattoni also said that he had changed his mind over the selection of Sean St Ledger against Bosnia. He had named the centre-half, who has battled a groin problem, in his team on Friday but he used him only as a 71st-minute substitute, believing that he ought not to risk him from the start.
