Roy Hodgson names his initial party for Poland and Ukraine with places up for grabs in most positions
Goalkeepers
On the plane Joe Hart
Anxiously waiting Scott Carson, Rob Green
Long shots Jack Butland, Frank Fielding, John Ruddy, David Stockdale
Injured None
With Hart now firmly established as England's No1, and looking set to remain in that position for the foreseeable future, Hodgson must only decide on deputies to the Manchester City player. Green and Carson have gained notoriety for errors when on international duty but the latter at least has the advantage of having worked with Hodgson at West Bromwich Albion. Ruddy has excelled for Norwich City in recent months, while Ben Foster has already ruled himself out.
Full-backs
On the plane Leighton Baines, Ashley Cole, Kyle Walker
Anxiously waiting Glen Johnson, Micah Richards
Long shots Kieran Gibbs
Injured None
Harry Redknapp has looked to allay fears over Walker's fitness, leaving Hodgson to decide which other right back from Richards and Johnson is worthy of a place in the squad. At Manchester City, Richards has found himself playing occasional back-up to Pablo Zabeleta, a matter which may harm his cause. Barring injury, the 93-times capped Cole will operate as first choice on the left side, in preference to Baines.
Centre-backs
On the plane Gary Cahill, Phil Jones, Joleon Lescott
Anxiously waiting Rio Ferdinand, Phil Jagielka, John Terry
Long shots None
Injured Michael Dawson, Chris Smalling
With the relationship between Ferdinand and Terry thought to be beyond repair, England's manager faces a genuine issue in resolving his first-choice centre-half partnership. As it stands, neither player is guaranteed a tournament call-up. The left-sided Lescott's claim to capitalise is strong after forming part of Manchester City's title-winning side, while Cahill has impressed following a slow start at Chelsea, although he is currently recovering from a hamstring injury.
Centre-midfielders
One the plane Gareth Barry, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, James Milner, Scott Parker
Anxiously waiting Michael Carrick, Tom Cleverley
Long shots Danny Murphy, Paul Scholes
Injured Tom Huddlestone, Jack Rodwell, Jack Wilshere
Arguably the strongest part of Hodgson's squad, with the manager's biggest problem likely to be how to accommodate a batch of experienced players. Parker's achilles problem has been the subject of concern, a matter which may open the door for Carrick or Cleverley. Scholes has said he could be receptive to the notion of returning from international retirement, even if the prospect of Hodgson turning to the 37-year-old remains unlikely.
Wide midfielders
On the plane Theo Walcott, Ashley Young
Anxiously waiting Stewart Downing, Aaron Lennon, Adam Johnson, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain
Long shots None
Injured None
Debate surrounds whether Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has done enough to warrant a call-up at the age of just 18. Downing has received mixed reviews for his performances in his maiden season at Liverpool, with the winger failing to score a single goal in the Premier League and failing to make an impact with regular assists. Lennon enjoyed more success at Tottenham, while Johnson will hope to atone for missing out on a place in the England squad for the last World Cup.
Strikers
On the plane Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck
Anxiously waiting Darren Bent, Andy Carroll, Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Daniel Sturridge, Bobby Zamora
Long shots Fraizer Campbell, Grant Holt
Rooney is suspended for the first two games of the tournament but will still be selected in the squad. Crouch and Defoe have reasonable-enough England scoring records to believe they are due a trip to Poland and Ukraine, to play in place of Rooney in the first instance and possibly alongside him thereafter. Yet Hodgson is a known admirer of Andy Carroll, despite his club struggles this season, and Welbeck has the advantage of being Rooney's regular partner at United. Read More
