• England manager praises Andy Carroll and Danny Welbeck
• Hodgson hints that Wayne Rooney will start against Ukraine

Roy Hodgson praised the contribution of Theo Walcott and his young forwards after England rallied to secure a first competitive victory over Sweden, a result that leaves them needing only a point from their final group game to progress to the quarter-finals.

Walcott scored his first international goal in almost four years within four minutes of his introduction to haul England level after Sweden had overturned a first-half deficit in the opening exchanges of the second period. Both Andy Carroll and Danny Welbeck, the latter with a wonderful backheel, also plundered goals to eliminate the Swedes, though one of the front pairing will make way for the returning Wayne Rooney.

Hodgson now faces selection dilemmas for all three of his scorers in Kiev, after Walcott, Carroll and Welbeck staked their cases for inclusion. "I welcome those kind of problems," the England manager said. "I was really pleased with the performance of the front players, and Theo Walcott's contribution was enormous. To come on as a substitute, score and then set up the winner means he'll be very happy. I believe in Theo: he's a good player with real quality. I've only been working with these players for a month and I'm still learning what they're really good at and what areas we can find improvement but I was delighted with his performance.

"Andy and Danny, too. The winning goal was a good move: Theo showed a lot of composure to find Danny at the near-post and he timed his run very well. It was a clever finish with the pirouette past the goalkeeper who thought he was going to toe it towards the near post. The finish actually went to the far post. It was a great goal to win the game.

"But Wayne Rooney is a special player and it'll be hard to leave him out. If you are one of the front players who gets into the team while Wayne Rooney is serving a suspension, I'm afraid you probably expect him to get his place back once that ban has been served. Against Ukraine, a player like Rooney can make a major difference and I am delighted to welcome him back. If I did leave him out, all hell might break loose in the dressing room."

There was dismay for Sweden, with their captain Zlatan Ibrahimovic insistent they had "played better than England". Yet the Milan striker pledged to strive to defeat France here on Tuesday while England attempt to secure the group by beating Ukraine.

Hodgson added: "I'm happy that a positive result, draw or win, would see us through the group. I'd be more than satisfied with that. There are no easy pickings for us.

"Our goal has to be that we don't slip from these standards and, hopefully, the addition of a player of Rooney's class will take some pressure off the defenders because he can change a game off his own bat.

"This was a cracking game and we had good control before Sweden rocked us back on our heels. The way our team responded was excellent.

"It's difficult at this level. We're playing against good teams but our attacking play showed good intentions and we looked dangerous. We limited them to not too many opportunities in free play and got a good victory against a team with good experience." Read More
