• Scott Parker comes through session before Norway friendly
• Andy Carroll and Jermain Defoe only fit strikers available

Roy Hodgson is worried about Danny Welbeck's fitness as he puts together his Euro 2012 plans and tries to make up for Wayne Rooney's absence in the first two games. Welbeck has been identified as the most likely candidate to lead England's attack against France and Sweden, but the striker has not played since being injured in a late challenge from Nigel de Jong during the Manchester derby on 30 April and was unable to take any part in Hodgson's first training session with his squad.

The Manchester United forward has been having intensive treatment on an ankle injury. He is also nursing a heavily bruised shinbone since the De Jong challenge that sparked a touchline row between Sir Alex Ferguson and Manchester City's Roberto Mancini. The FA has described Welbeck's absence from training as a precaution but it means his participation in the friendly against Norway on Saturday is in doubt.

Hodgson has more encouraging news about the fitness of Scott Parker after the Tottenham Hotspur midfielder came through the 90-minute session at Manchester City's Etihad Stadium. Parker has suffered from a persistent achilles problem but has responded well to an injection. England's medical staff will continue to monitor him closely but there are positive signs ahead of the weekend fixture in Oslo.

Apart from Welbeck, Glen Johnson was the only player to sit out a session that was preceded and followed by Hodgson talking with the players about what he wants from them in next month's tournament. The Liverpool full-back is nursing a minor injury, which explains Martin Kelly's call-up to the group as back-up. Kelly's promotion follows Micah Richards's decision not to be part of Hodgson's standby list on the back on his disappointment about being overlooked in favour of Johnson and Phil Jones.

Welbeck's injury means Hodgson may have only two strikers, Andy Carroll and Jermain Defoe, available for his first warm-up match, with Rooney being given time off at this stage. Hodgson will hope, however, that Welbeck can take part in England's next session on Thursday before the squad fly to Oslo the following day. Read More
