• Former name painted on outside of Sports Direct Arena
• Latest among numerous attacks since name change

A graffiti protest has again inscribed the words St James' Park on the outside of Newcastle United's home ground which underwent a name change to the Sports Direct Arena in February.

Northumbria police has said it received a report of criminal damage at Newcastle's football ground at 2.50am on Friday morning after a person had "vandalised" the walls of the stadium.

"Someone damaged the walls of the stadium and inquiries into this incident are ongoing," a force spokesman said.

There have been a number of incidents commemorating the ground's historic name since the signs were removed in February.

Last month Michael Atkinson, a Newcastle United fan, was ordered to pay £100 compensation and given a conditional discharge after he admitted painting the words on the stadium wall. Police are asking anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and contact them. Read More
