• Bristol City safe but Portsmouth and Coventry go down
• Reading secure Championship title, Charlton win League One

Portsmouth will compete in the third tier of English football for the first time in 30 years after their nightmare season ended with a 2-1 home defeat to Derby. While Bristol City's win over Barnsley meant their fate was sealed anyway, the way they bowed out of the Championship was another disappointment.

Their midfielder David Norris, though, praised the club's fans, who kept their sense of humour – with songs including "Que sera, sera, we're going to Shrewsbury". Norris said: "I've never known fans like it. To give us the support they have is unbelievable. It's my first experience of being relegated and it's with a club that doesn't deserve it."

Bristol City's manager Derek McInnes admitted "relief, rather than joy" at their survival. "The players deserve huge credit. We can all enjoy a drink tonight."

At the other end of the table, Reading secured the title with a 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace, while Blackpool guaranteed a play-off place with a 4-0 win over Burnley. "I'm delighted," said Ian Holloway. "But whether we can beat the other teams in the play-offs is on a knife-edge."

Charlton wrapped up the League One title with a 2-1 win over Wycombe, but the fight for the second automatic promotion spot will go into another week after differing fortunes for the two Sheffield clubs. Sheffield United remain second but are now just one point ahead of Wednesday following their 1-0 defeat at MK Dons. The Owls snatched a late win over Carlisle. Huddersfield join MK Dons in the play-offs after beating Scunthorpe.

At the other end, Rochdale's relegation was confirmed with a 2-1 defeat at Chesterfield, but Exeter fight on after a 4-2 win over 10-man Walsall. They remain, though, five points from safety.

Swindon were promoted to League One, despite losing 3-1 at Gillingham. Second-placed Shrewsbury missed their chance, though, drawing 1-1 with Accrington. At the other end of League Two, Macclesfield slipped behind Hereford to go bottom, losing 1-0 at Bradford.
